Decatur, IL (WAND) – Congress wants to tinker with time. On Wednesday, the U.S. House voted 308-117 on the Sunshine Protection Act to make daylight saving time permanent.

The measure now moves on to the Senate. President Donald Trump has indicated previously that he would sign the bill into law.

Proponents want to provide more evening sunlight hours, while opponents point to sunrise coming later during the winter months.

“People like the benefits of daylight saving time in the summer,” University of Illinois professor Sheldon Jacobson told WAND News. “But in the winter they would like to have more light in the morning. But they also like more light in the afternoon.”

A similar measure was passed by Congress in 1974, but was lifted a short time later.
