Three rescued from central Springfield apartment fire

Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Three people had to be resident after their converted apartment building caught fire Sunday morning.

According to a news release from the Springfield Fire Department, the blaze was first reported around 9:45 a.m. near Enterprise and Eighth Streets.

Fire officials say three people had to be rescued from the building, along with several pets.  Several other pets, however lost their lives.

Officials say the blaze was able to be put out as it was starting to spread to the rest of the building.

An investigation into the cause and origin of the fire is continuing.  Damage is described as moderate, but with heavy smoke damage.

Those rescued declined to be taken to the hospital.  Five people living in the building received assistance from the Red Cross.
