Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Have you seen the newest landmark of sorts that’s been placed on the Illinois State Fairgrounds?

Visit Springfield” Director Scott Dahl says it’s an homage to one of the things that makes Springfield — and historic Route 66 — so great.

“(It’s) a nearly 25-foot-tall, double-sided Cozy Dog —  again, the theme being the Cozy Dog this year — sign, featuring authentic neon ketchup and mustard, by the way,” said Dahl.  “This incredible tribute recognizes Route 66 icons, and will also share the story of the Waldmire family,” Dahl says, the family that helped make the Cozy Dog famous.

Dahl says the big dog will tell the story of how they’ve become passionate about art and storytelling.

The second — and final — weekend of this year’s state fair will largely be devoted to the Cozy Dog, including an attempt at breaking a record set years ago at an inferior state (with an inferior butter cow).

“The Illinois State Fair aims to break a record.  We are going to try and break the record for the most Cozy Dogs eaten simultaneously,” said Rebecca Clark, State Fair Manager.  “The record is 8,400 participants, set in 2008, by the Iowa State Fair.  We hope to shatter that record this year on Friday, August 21st, at the Ella Langley concert (in the grandstand).”

Clark says there will be chances to share memories of the meat on a stick that weekend, among other things, as well.

The efforts come as this is the 100th Anniversary of Route 66, and the “Miles of Smiles” State Fair theme being connected to the anniversary.
