Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Saturday’s snow storm and Sunday’s bitterly cold temperatures may be it for a little while in the Springfield area.
According to snowfall reports from the National Weather Service in Lincoln, Sherman and Dawson each recorded five inches of snow Saturday, and near Berry reported 5.5 inches. Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport, however, recorded 3.6 inches as of 12 p.m. Saturday. An updated total was not available.
The snow Saturday in the Springfield area claimed at least one life due to a “multi-vehicle crash,” while numerous accidents were reported all over Central Illinois.
Areas to the north and east of Sangamon County recorded higher totals, and some of that area is also seeing the coldest temperatures. Sangamon County is under a Cold Weather Advisory until 6 a.m. Monday. Christian County, for example, is under an Extreme Cold Warning until 12 p.m. Sunday, at which point it switches to a Cold Weather Advisory. Temperatures overnight went below zero, and highs Sunday after only expected to be in the single digits. One more night below zero is expected by Sunday night. The cold and snow caused some events to be cancelled Sunday in Springfield.
Then, the snow will start to melt. Highs will be in the mid 20’s Monday under sunny skies, rising to 38 by Tuesday, and being in the 40’s the rest of the week. There is rain possible in the forecast Thursday. So, by the end of the week, the snow could be a distant memory.
