Springfield, IL (WAND) – The Springfield Police Department is alerting residents after several reports of fraudulent donation solicitations in west side shopping areas throughout October.

According to police, multiple male suspects approached individuals claiming to be collecting funds for the Boys and Girls Club. Victims reported that the men requested credit card donations — but after processing the payments, the charges were significantly higher than the agreed-upon amounts.

Police later confirmed that the suspects have no connection to the Boys and Girls Club or any legitimate charity.

“With the holiday season approaching, we want the community to remain vigilant when approached by anyone requesting donations,” said Assistant Chief Ryan Leach. “This applies not only in person but also over the phone and online. While most charitable organizations are legitimate, unfortunately, some may attempt to take advantage of generous individuals.”

The Springfield Police Department is encouraging residents to take extra precautions when donating:

  • Verify with the business whether the organization is authorized to collect donations on-site.
  • Ask for identification or documentation from the organization.
  • Avoid untraceable payment methods such as gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency.
  • Watch for pressure tactics or attempts to create a false sense of urgency.

Anyone who suspects they’ve encountered fraudulent activity is urged to contact the Springfield Police Department.
