Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – New to the Illinois State Fair this year:  a special competition involving a special group of people.

The first-time event in question will be Saturday at 10:00 a.m. in the Coliseum, and it’s called the “Sunflower Showmanship Competition.”

“Through a partnership with Illinois 4H, Special Olympics athletes will be paired with livestock exhibitors to learn how to care for, show, and lead a sheep in the showring,” said Rebecca Clark, State Fair Manager.

But it’s more than just about a competition, said Clark.

“This isn’t simply about a livestock show,” said Clark.  “This is about building confidence, creating opportunity, and making livestock exhibition at the Illinois State Fair an inclusive experience for all.”

“Programs like Sunflower Showmanship demonstrate the power of partnerships and the impact of creating inclusive and accessible experiences for all youth,” said Tara Nickerson, Assistant Director, Special Olympics of Illinois – Region H, in a news release. “We are grateful for the opportunity to give our Special Olympics athletes an authentic exhibition experience that encourages confidence, connection and exposure to Illinois agriculture.”

The public is invited to watch the competition.
