Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – A retired Springfield police sergeant was taken into custody Monday afternoon in connection with Thursday night’s crash that left two with serious injuries. Michael Egan, 50, was originally cited for failure to yield the right-of-way when he made a left turn in the 400 block of East Lake Shore Drive.
The motorcyclist and his passenger were ejected from the bike after hitting the side of Egan’s 2018 Toyota. Illinois State Police were to called in to investigate.
According to ISP, agents obtained search warrants to collect evidence including a blood draw which was processed through the ISP Division of Forensic Services and the evidence was presented to the Sangamon County State’s Attorney’s Office.
Egan was arrested by ISP and U.S. Marshals on charges of aggravated DUI and causing great bodily harm, a class 4 felony, and was transported to the Sangamon County Jail.
In an effort to maintain transparency and accountability, SPD Chief Ken Scarlette said Friday that an internal investigation would be conducted to determine if SPD officers followed policies and procedures at the scene.
