St. Joseph, IL (WAND) – The pilot of a crop duster helicopter was seriously injured in a crash in rural Champaign County Thursday evening.

According to the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office, the helicopter had hit nearby power lines while working just west of St. Joseph.

That is about 10 miles east of Urbana.

The Sheriff’s Office added that the pilot was the only person aboard the aircraft and was taken to the hospital to be treated for serious injuries.

An Ameren outage map reported over 1,100 customers without power in the area.

The National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash.
