SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) – A man was arrested following a deadly early morning crash in Springfield over the weekend.

Roy Adams, 27, faces charges of driving under the influence, aggravated DUI causing death and bodily harm, and obstructing justice by destroying evidence.

Court records show that Adams made his first appearance Monday. He was denied pretrial release and remained in custody at the Sangamon County Jail.

A probable cause statement of Adams’ arrest said the crash happened on Sunday near South 5th Street and East Laurel St. in Springfield.

Officers found that an Audi traveling west on Laurel hit a Toyota driving south on 5th Street. Witnesses at the scene told officers the Audi sped through a red light before hitting the Toyota.

The Audi driver, identified as Adams, appeared unhurt in the crash. A woman riding with him was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The other driver, identified as 62-year-old Darren Polk, was taken to the hospital. He died just before 7 a.m. The coroner said an autopsy found Polk died from blunt force injuries he suffered in the crash.

The statement said that an officer later caught up with Adams at the hospital and noticed he had alcohol on his breath, along with a burnt cannabis smell from his clothes.

The officer said in the statement that Adams’ eyes were “slightly” bloodshot and had slow and repetitive speech. Adams admitted to being involved in the crash, but could not explain how it happened.

Adams also told the officer he came from a bar, but denied drinking.

The statement said he provided a blood sample after he initially refused.

Adams was then taken to jail once the officer found him too impaired to drive.
