Learning about the railroad

Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – A traveling exhibit – now in Springfield until November – tells an arguably underpublicized story: that of the Underground Railroad, a network of abolitionists who helped slaves escape the South.

“We think of things antagonistically: Blacks against whites,” said Brian Mitchell, director of research and interpretation at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. “However, history does not work that way. No matter how fraught the situation, they were allies.”,

The exhibit, “Journey to Freedom,” is at Lincoln Library – the public library – before touring downstate. The Looking for Lincoln National Heritage Area is behind the exhibit.
