(CAPITOL CITY NOW) – When a police officer encounters somebody on the autism spectrum – say, during a traffic stop – that officer may not be able to detect the situation or predict the outcome. Helpful information can now be included in a blue envelope which the driver can give to the officer.
“The blue envelope contains specific actionable information for both the driver and the officer: communication style, sensory triggers, contact information, guidance on what to expect during the stop, and instructions to help reduce anxiety,” State Rep. Michelle Mussman (D-Schaumburg) said at a news conference Tuesday. “That mutual clarity is at the heart of safer interactions. Our friends on the spectrum now have a tool in hand.”
“Many folks don’t recognize that those who have autism spectrum disorder have, I want to say, conditions that might make law enforcement wonder, are they being suspicious? Is there something going on?” said State Sen. Cristina Castro (D-Elgin).
The Illinois secretary of state‘s office will administer the program. Blue envelopes will be available free of charge at DMV’s and at participating police departments.
