Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Gas prices have declined in the State of Illinois, even as they went up in three-quarters of the nation.

A weekly update from GasBuddy.com shows the average price of a gallon of unleaded now at $3.35 a gallon — that’s three cents a gallon lower than last week, though the agency has a $1.63 spread between the lowest price in the state ($2.86), and the highest ($4.49).

AAA has an average price in Illinois of $3.37 as of Monday.

Analysts with gas buddy say the average price jumped in 75 percent of the United State last week, fueled by the changing tariff situation and other negotiated trade deals.

“In addition to gains in price-cycling markets, rising oil prices—fueled by economic optimism and tightening gasoline inventories—contributed to broader upward pressure on prices. While Americans are still seeing significant savings compared to a year ago, that gap has narrowed as oil prices have rebounded,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, in a news release.  “As we approach Memorial Day, GasBuddy is preparing to release its summer travel survey results and issue a gas price forecast for the season. For now, motorists can expect one of the most affordable summers for hitting the road since the pandemic, with gas prices tracking at some of the lowest inflation-adjusted levels in years.”

The national average price, GasBuddy, is $3.14 a gallon, which is what Springfield-area prices are close to. Springfield gas prices are around $3.19 a gallon, with the exception of Sam’s Club, which is under $3 a gallon.
