Chicago, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – A former alderman in Chicago wants to run for one of the top elected posts in Springfield.

According to a statement, Bob Fioretti, a self-described Democrat-turned-Republican, is running for Attorney General.  The post is currently held by former lawmaker, Kwame Raoul.  Fioretti announced his campaign in Chicago.

“As your Attorney General, I will fight for common sense values we all share: Standing up FOR crime victims instead of violent criminals, FOR our citizens instead of illegal aliens, FOR parents instead of teachers’ unions, and FOR taxpayers instead of corrupt politicians,” said Fioretti, in a prepared statement.  “As I always have, I will stand WITH law enforcement as they risk their lives every day to keep us safe. I’m going to continue to do what I’ve always done my entire life: fighting for safe streets, strong communities and thriving businesses.”

In his statement, Fioretti says he is opposed to the lawsuits the state has filed or been part of regarding various moves and decisions by the Trump administration, claiming the state will now spend millions of dollars defending the suits.  He also claims the state, through lawsuits,  “also seek to guarantee men can continue to compete in women’s sports, and ensure Illinois’ elections continue to be among the worst run in the nation.”

According to his biography, Fioretti, an attorney, has been the victor in at least two elections, representing the Second Ward on the Chicago City Council, in 2007 and 2011.

Fioretti is a Chicago resident, and is married.  He’s the third Republican to announce a candidacy for Attorney General, including former Jackson County State’s Attorney Joe Cervantez, and minister Andy Williams, Jr.  Raoul is the only Democrat running so far.
