Flooding rains in Springfield twice Monday

Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Springfield got a lot of rain in two storms Monday and overnight.

According to storm reports submitted to the National Weather Service, as of early Tuesday morning, the second round of flooding rains totaled 2.33 inches. Other parts of the Springfield area had similar rain totals.

From a storm late Monday morning, Springfield got 3.5 inches of rain, while other areas reported much less.

The Monday evening storms resulted in Springfield firefighters having to perform a water rescue in one of the more flood-prone areas of downtown: Third Street and Capitol Avenue. Photos from Springfield Firefighters Local 37 show a vehicle almost completely submerged in water, and firefighters having to use equipment to move the truck. No further word was known.

More rain chances are in the forecast for the rest of this week. And, for the next couple days, it will be hot. Highs are expected to be in the 90’s for at least Wednesday and Thursday, and heat index values close to 100.
