Events at Lincoln Library tell the story of the 1908 Springfield Race Riot

Springfield, IL  (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – The Lincoln Library is set to commemorate the 1908 Springfield Race Riot with two days of events. Thursday marks the 116th anniversary of the riot.

On Wednesday, the library will show the film “Springfield Had No Shame” starting at 6 p.m. The film uses historical photographs, readings, re-enactments and comments from historians and eyewitnesses to tell the story of the riot. Kathryn Harris, Doris Baily and Janay Hammons will speak about researching the riots following the film.

Dr. Brian Mitchell, director of research and interpretation at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum will present “A Closer Look at the Affected Community:  An Examination of Businesses and Families Impacted by the Springfield Massacre” on Thursday starting at 2:30 p.m.

The events will be held in Carnegie Room, North where the “Something So Horrible” exhibit, curated by the ALPLM, will also be on display both days.
