Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – An omnibus energy bill moved out of the Illinois House Wednesday night, setting up a possible Senate vote on the final day of the legislature’s fall veto session.

The Clean and Reliable Grid Affordability Act follows other legislation which, said State Rep. Dan Ugaste (R-Geneva), has not delivered on cost savings, which “never materialized, and now we are taking another swipe at it, hoping we get some cost savings in the not-too-distant future. Our ratepayers are suffering now.”

State Rep. Ann Williams (D-Chicago), as a form of rebuttal, asked sponsor State Rep. Jay Hoffman (D-Swansea), “Was there not a refund due customers in 2026 based on the carbon mitigation credits, which would total 6 to 11 dollars a month?”

“I think $2.6 billion in credits were made available,” answered Hoffman.

The bill’s inclusion of a removal of a moratorium on nuclear construction is not enough to sway Republicans whose districts include nuclear plants.
