Davidsmeyer: IL remap would be more JB hypocrisy

Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Illinois House Republicans want no part of a mid-decade redistricting, other than to call out Democrats for how they want to do it.

State Rep. C.D. Davidsmeyer (R-Murrayville), at a statehouse news conference Tuesday, quoted Gov. JB Pritzker as saying the practice is cheating and should outrage the American public. The representative added, “What people ought to be outraged about is Gov. Pritzker himself and his flip-flop on the issue of fair maps.” Pritzker campaigned on a promise not to sign a politically-drawn map, then signed into law the current map – one which has been ridiculed by late-night television comedians, including one during a Pritzker guest appearance in which the governor joked that Illinois let kindergarteners draw the map.

Texas Republicans, hoping to guard against possible losses in next year’s election, got the mid-decade remap ball rolling, with California Democrats following suit. State Rep. Ryan Spain (pictured, left) (R-Peoria) spins the “what about” question back toward Illinois: “Neither one (of those states) will be as badly gerrymandered as Illinois already is.” Spain, joining Davidsmeyer and State Rep. Dan Ugaste (pictured, right) (R-Geneva) at the news conference, called for a national referendum on gerrymandering.
