Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – They’ve been called to the crime scene, gathered evidence and interviewed suspects but now can they solve the crime?

Thats what around 25 area high school students will try to do at the UIS/CSI summer camp this week.

This is the third year for the popular summer-time program.

WTAX News spoke with instructor, Jennifer Faulkner. She says the kids use the Simulation House to examine a recreated crime scene where they will try to lift fingerprints and match them to other samples, learn about handwriting analysis, talk to the ‘victim’ and possible perpetrators and come up with an answer the mystery.

Brother and sister, Andrew and Hailey Sexton, students from North Mac were in attendance. Hailey takes credit for getting her and her brother signed up. She says she loves to learn new things and hopes she can use her knowledge to help children in her future career. Andrew hopes to become a public defender and thought this would be a great chance to learn about various evidence gathering techniques.

UIS Coordinator, Christine Lindsey says, likely due to the popularity of the CSI television show, the summer camp is a big hit with young people. She says in addition to the hands-on work, the students will get to meet various law-enforcement professional who will talk about their careers.
