Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – An investigation continues after what the Sangamon County Coroner says was a human skull was found a month ago in a Springfield creek.

Coroner Jim Allmon says the skull was discovered September 20 in the 6200 block of Winterberry Lane.  The area in question is near Toronto Road and N. Cotton Hill Road.

Allmon says he examined the skull, followed by an anthropologist, and has since been sent to an Illinois State Police crime lab to potentially extract DNA from it.  There is no word on how long that will take.

Allmon says both Springfield Police and his office are investigating.
