Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) — After nearly seven years of legal and ownership complications, the City of Springfield has finally gained control over several buildings in the troubled Olde Towne Apartments complex—opening the door to long-awaited redevelopment.

Ward 9 Alderman Jim Donelan says the city had no legal options until recent court rulings.

“We’ve been stuck for years,” Donelan said. “Now, we can finally move forward.”

The complex, located near Jefferson Street and Bruns Lane, has been mostly vacant since May 2024.

Five buildings are slated for demolition due to safety concerns, while seven others are in the process of demolition.

Donelan says developers and local property owners are already expressing interest in restoring the site. “The goal is to make these properties viable again—for the sake of the neighborhoods and the city as a whole.”

The city’s next steps include tightening up any loose ends and Donelan praised the Mayor and Council for the handling of the project

Donelan spoke Wednesday on the WTAX Morning Newswatch
