Can’t find a Valentine’s Day gift? How about somebody’s forgotten baseball cards?

(CAPITOL CITY NOW) – The contents of somebody’s forgotten safe deposit box can make you a hero on Feb. 14. That’s what state Treasurer Mike Frerichs says, anyway.

“We’re excited for this online auction,” Frerichs said. “Valentine’s Day may never be the same! Whether your valentine collects coins, comics, or cupids, there is truly something unique for everyone.”

Among the highlights: tickets to the 1893 World’s Colombian Exposition; and a Lincoln half-dollar to commemorate Illinois’ centennial in 1918.

Frerichs says bidders must register before bidding, with all the information about the unclaimed property program available on the treasurer’s site.

Among the more unusual items the treasurer’s office has accumulated are an unworn pair of Air Jordans, still in the box; and a sword.

The treasurer’s office keeps items for at least ten years before selling them. If the rightful owner – or an heir – shows up after the item is sold, that person gets the money the top bidder paid.
