Decatur, IL (WAND) – Much of Central Illinois is experiencing very dry conditions as the season inches closer to fall.

The conditions put the region at risk of wildfires, which is why many burn bans have been issued in communities and counties throughout the area.

WAND News and Capitol City Now will keep you up to date on burn bans as they come in.

Athens

The City of Athens issued a burn advisory Friday night, which will begin effective immediately and remain in effect until further notice.

Athens said in a press release Sept. 12 that all open burning, including bonfires, fire pits, brush piles and burn barrels, is prohibited.

The City added that charcoal and gas grills can be used only if attended at all times.

Coles County

The Coles County Emergency Management Agency has issued a county-wide burn ban due to dry conditions and wildfire risk.

The agency said in a Facebook post Friday afternoon that the ban begins at midnight and will remain until further notice.

County residents are urged not to do open burning of any kind and not to set off fireworks.

However, the agency added that small campfires in fire rings or contained fire pits are allowed, as long as residents do not leave them unattended and extinguish them when done.
