Bird flu outbreak raises concerns in Illinois after waterfowl deaths

(CAPITOL CITY NOW) – The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is tracking a significant die-off of waterfowl across the state, with test results pointing to avian influenza as the cause.

Residents are being urged to avoid handling or attempting to capture sick or dead birds. IDNR advises reporting clusters of five or more dead birds found in one spot to district wildlife biologists online.

Pet owners should keep animals away from bird carcasses due to the risk of infection. For disposal of dead birds, the Illinois Department of Public Health offers guidelines.

People who are exposed to sick or dead birds should monitor their health closely. Symptoms like fever, cough, and difficulty breathing should be reported to local health departments immediately. Antiviral treatments are most effective within two days of the onset of illness.

Hunters are also instructed to cook game meat thoroughly to 165°F and avoid handling sick or dead waterfowl.

The outbreak extends beyond wild birds, with cases reported in domestic poultry across Illinois and other states.
