UPDATED 12:47 p.m.

Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Springfield Police have arrested a man they believe shot and killed another man over the weekend near downtown Springfield.

Springfield Police say Christopher Coleman, 29, was arrested over the weekend on West North Grand Ave. on unrelated drug charges and an in-state warrant, but the Sangamon County State’s Attorney filed a charge Monday of First Degree Murder.  Coleman is in the Sangamon County Jail awaiting a court appearance.

Police were called to the 400 block of East Washington St., in-between 4th and 5th Streets near downtown, prior to 1:00 am Saturday.  A man Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon identifies as Jayvon Bankhead, 22, of Springfield, was found having been shot.  He was taken to a hospital where he later died.

Allmon says Bankhead died less than three hours later from a single gunshot wound, based on an autopsy.

Police continue to urge anyone with information to call Springfield Police or Sangamon and Menard County Crime Stoppers.

Springfield Police are crediting their Proactive Crime Unit and their Street Crimes Unit with identifying Coleman as a suspect.
