Chicago, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Illinois State Police (ISP) say a driver side-swiped one of their squad cars while it was on a traffic stop in the Chicago area early Tuesday morning.

ISP says it happened around 1:25 a.m. Tuesday on Interstate 94 in Chicago.  Troopers say one of their squad cars was pulled over working on a traffic stop when a black sport utility vehicle hit it before speeding off.

Damage, ISP says, was minimal, and the trooper was not hurt.

What they do say is that it’s at least the 14th violation of “Scott’s Law” involving an ISP squad car this year.  That’s the law that requires motorists to slow down and move over when they see any emergency vehicle ahead with flashing lights.

In 2024, ISP says, they dealt with 27 violators, injuring 12 troopers and causing one death.  This year, there have been no life-threatening injuries.

A person who violates the Move Over Law faces a fine of no less than $250 and no more than $10,000 for a first offense. If the violation results in injury to another person, the violator’s driver’s license will be suspended for a mandatory period of anywhere between six months and two years,” said a news release.
