Angst over possible Jerome TIF district

Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – A possible tax increment finance district in Jerome sounds like bad news to District 186.

While no decision’s been made in Jerome, “it’s not for businesses,” said board member Ken Gilmore. “They want sidewalks, which they’ve never had. They need to improve the sewers. Some of us have our taxes raised, but they have no plan to raise their taxes. They are going after a TIF and taking the money away from education.”

An attorney told the board that Jerome and the district could negotiate some relief, but it would likely be less than what had been talked about before.
