Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) -You’ve heard the last several years when you call 9-1-1, you might need a social worker more than you need a police officer or firefighter.

That’s where BEACON comes in. City officials Tuesday introduced the Bridging Emergency and Community Outreach Network.

“BEACON isn’t just a new program; it’s a smarter, more coordinated way to serve our community,” said fire chief Nick Zummo (pictured). “It’s a practical, common-sense solution to make our city safer and our response more effective.”

“It’s a program that combines medical experience, expertise, and social work, bringing hope, healing, and help to those who need it most,” added police chief Joe Behl. “This is more than a program; it’s a promise. It’s a promise from the city of Springfield to make an impact to those who are being affected by opioid addiction.”

With the BEACON comes an ambulance called the BOLT – Beacon Outreach Life-saving Treatment. “The BOLT will not rest,” said Mayor Misty Buscher.

Opioid settlement funds are paying for the program.
