Shooting By Decatur Police Officer Justified

A shooting by a Decatur police officer earlier this summer has been ruled justified.

That’s according to our news partners at WAND-TV. Macon County State’s Attorney Jay Scott says the shooting July 11th of 40-year-old Lonnie Mitchell by Officer Andrew Wittmer came as Mitchell was resisting arrest following a report of a man with a gun in the area of East Main and Hilton in Decatur. Scott also says Mitchell will not be prosecuted in the case, and the gun Mitchell had later turned out to be a B-B gun.

The Illinois State Police completed their investigation into the matter two weeks ago, leading Scott to issue his decision.

Wittmer is being allowed to return to regular duty.
