Winnebago County Faces Budget Shortfall, Considers Hiring Freeze

A northern Illinois county may put a freeze on all hiring to address a $2.5 million budget shortfall.

Winnebago County officials are considering the cost-saving measure as they draft a spending plan for the fiscal year that begins Oct. 1.

The hiring freeze would last for up to three months.

Some department administrators expressed concern about not being able to fill positions if someone quits or retires.

Bill Hintz is the county’s chief deputy coroner. He says he’s worried about the stress of losing a staff member or not replacing someone. The department recently replaced a deputy coroner who retired.

Hintz says: “If we did not replace that deputy, it definitely would have hindered us quite a bit.”
