A fire Thursday displaced a Springfield family of four. The Red Cross arrived on the scene shortly after the fire department to assist the victims along with providing coffee for the first responders.

The organization’s work is often times unnoticed.  Interim director Jeff Regan says in addition to housing, the Red Cross is helping with clothing, food, and medicine.

“We will issue a client assistance card. There’s a monetary amount  on it. You use it like a debit card, there’s a threshhold on it.  We scrutinize debit capacity on those cards because its donated dollars and we want to make sure we appropriately dispense those funds” says Regan.

Regan points out the Red Cross relies on donations and volunteers from the community it serves.  The Springfield police and fire departments usually contacts the Red Cross in situations such as Thursday’s fire.
