Troops serving overseas will be able to enjoy a slice of Illinois on Super Bowl Sunday.

The group Pizza 4 Patriots is sending 10,000 Chicago-style deep dish pizzas to service members in Afghanistan, Kuwait, and Oman, which is enough to feed every soldier stationed there. Gov. Pat Quinn believes it’s a nice reminder of home for those in the military.

“It’s important that we understand that we here in Illinois, even if our team, the Bears, are not there, the Super Bowl is as American as it gets,” Quinn said, “and it’s important to tell the men and women in uniform, who volunteered to go forward in dangerous places to defend our democracy, that we’re with them.”

Quinn says it’s also fitting because more pizza is eaten in the United States on Super Bowl Sunday than on any other day of the year.

The ready-to-bake pizzas come from Great Kitchens Inc., a food company based in Romeoville, and will be delivered to the Middle East by DHL Express.

Celebrate safely with these fireworks tips

Since Independence Day falls during the work week, members of St. Richard Catholic Church celebrated the holiday on Sunday, June 30, 2013, with a picnic-style outing complete with fireworks that could be seen throughout the northeast Jackson, Miss. neighborhood.
