Jim Oberweis will be the Republican candidate for U.S. Senate.

Oberweis, now a state senator from Sugar Grove, tried twice before to win the Republican nomination for Senate, in 2002 and 2004, but fell short, losing in the Republican primary both times. This time, he was a winner, defeating first-time political candidate Doug Truax.

At his election night party at the Oberweis Dairy and Restaurant in Glen Ellyn, he immediately launched into the man he’ll campaign against now, U.S. Sen. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.).

“We go forward and hopefully run this campaign as fast and hard as we can to eliminate a guy who has compared our military to the Nazis. A guy who’s been in Washington for 32 years, which is way too long, and now he’s asking for six more years,” Oberweis said.

He says it’ll be an expensive race, but if polling shows it to be close, the money will be there.

Truax, running his first political race, did not hesitate to throw his support to his party’s nominee. “We’ve got to help Jim Oberweis beat Dick Durbin,” he told his supporters in Oak Brook.

U.S. SENATE – Republican primary

Jim Oberweis – 407,308 – 56 percent
Doug Truax – 320,777 – 44 percent
