Clout Questions Heat Up In GOP Governor Race

Two Republican candidates for governor are accusing one another of using their influence to get family and friends into certain schools.

State Sen. Kirk Dillard (R-Hinsdale) is bashing Bruce Rauner over a report in the Chicago Sun-Times that Rauner got his daughter’s rejection to Walter Payton College Prep in Chicago overturned, and later donated $250,000 to the school.

“I think this was pure payback for having the Chicago Public Schools let his daughter in after she was rejected,” Dillard said.

Rauner has fired back by accusing the other candidates – Dillard, State Sen. Bill Brady (R-Bloomington) and State Treasurer Dan Rutherford – of helping politically-connected applicants get into the University of Illinois.

Dillard denies that claim.

“The one or two people that I have ever written letters of recommendation to for the University of Illinois are there, they’re public. I think the ones I wrote actually were rejected,” Dillard said.

Dillard said if Rauner wins the Republican nomination, stories like this will hurt the party’s chances of unseating Gov. Pat Quinn.
