The never ending conversations about a parts contract with NAPA Auto Parts didn’t get any resolution this week, and likely won’t for several more weeks.
The city is considering whether to enter a three year contract with NAPA to manage parts for its vehicle fleet in the new consolidated garage. Budget Director Bill McCarty says a few changes have been made, including forcing NAPA to buy parts from local vendors when they don’t have something available — even if it’s more expensive.
“We have also changed the termination period from 60 days to 90 days,” McCarty adds, noting some aldermen were concerned there wouldn’t be enough notice should NAPA decide to pull out of the contract.
McCarty notes, however, that NAPA has never cancelled a government contract.
The revised contract also says NAPA will charge a 7 percent markup on materials instead of 10 percent. Parts in a NAPA store are usually marked up in the 40-45 percent range, according to McCarty.
It’s unclear if there’s enough support to approve the contract, which would cost $3.75 million over three years.
