Springfield’s future Kidzeum of Health and Science is well on its way to a target opening date of next summer thanks, in part, to two sizable donations.

“It brings our overall fundraising goal to $5 million,” says Kidzeum board president Rachael Thomson. “That covers the capital construction costs of the building and the exhibits. We hope to start renovating sometime this year.”

Kidzeum board president Rachael Thomson was on hand to receive $1 million from the state and $675,000 from the city in TIF funds. Construction still needs to be done and exhibits will start to take shape next week.

“We’re working with banking institutions across Springfield for a line of credit so that we will have the capital available so we can start some renovations now,” said Thomson. “We do have another million dollars that we need to raise.”

The state’s donation was budgeted as part of 2009′s capital construction program, and the tax increment financing dollars from the city will be used as reimbursement once work is finished.
