Singer Hilary Duff had the state of her marriage on her mind when she sat down to write new material for her latest album and reveals one of the tracks is all about what was going through her head.

The “So Yesterday” hitmaker announced she had split from husband Mike Comrie in January, and now she reveals she poured her heart out in emotional songs about her man and their baby son Luca.

During a Billboard.com Pop Shop podcast on Thursday, Duff explained, “I’m separated from my husband right now, which has been a very difficult thing to go through, but we have a lot of love for each other and we have this beautiful baby.

“There’s a song about Luca and a song about my separation and my love for this person, that maybe we’re not meant to be together, or maybe we are. It’s very, very personal… I think I just needed to get that out.”

Duff is on the verge of a major comeback after a five-year hiatus, during which she became a wife and mother, and learned how to cook and renovate homes.

She admitted she’s glad she took time away from he music business: “I was having the best time, but after about five years, I was like, ‘I have no life, I have, like, two friends, I’m never home, I’m never with my family’. I kind of needed to shut it all down. It was time for me to be a person and learn who I wanted to be.”
