The Foo Fighters delighted fans in New Orleans, Louisiana on Saturday night by staging a surprise show at the city’s Preservation Hall.

The Best of You hitmakers invited devotees to join them in the courtyard of the historic venue just hours before showtime by posting a photo on Twitter.com of frontman Dave Grohl with two members of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band alongside the message, “So…NOLA (New Orleans, Louisiana), what’re you guys up to tonight?”.

Fans flooded the area and were treated to another unexpected appearance by Arcade Fire stars Win Butler and Regine Chassagne, who joined the Preservation Hall Jazz Band onstage as the show openers for a rendition of traditional local song Iko Iko.

The Foo Fighters, who had spent the past few days recording new songs in the venue, then took over and played a 90-minute performance, during which Grohl shared details about their musical journey in the city.

Discussing the band’s album recording process, he said, “This time, I feel like we really have gotten it right. We stayed here long enough so we learned a little bit about the city. We made a lot of friends.”

He added to the crowd, “We’ve been to a lot of great places, we’ve jammed with a lot of great people. But this week in this city has changed our band forever.”

The Preservation Hall Jazz Band later returned to the stage with musician Trombone Shorty to belt out the rockers’ 1995 single, This Is a Call.

This isn’t the first surprise show Grohl’s put on for fans – he recently played unexpected gigs in Washington, D.C. and Nashville, Tennessee earlier this month.
