Corvette takes top honors at Detroit Auto Show

DETROIT (AP) — The Chevrolet Corvette Stingray has been named North American Car of the Year at the North American International Auto Show. The truck of the year is the Chevrolet Silverado.

The press preview days for the North American International Auto Show kick off with the awards. The announcements came Monday morning at Cobo Center in Detroit.

The Chevy sweep came after General Motors made the most appearances on this year’s list finalists. Others included the Cadillac CTS and Mazda3. Truck/utility finalists included the Acura MDX and Jeep Cherokee.

Forty-eight automotive journalists vote on winners from the list of finalists.

A vehicle must be all new or substantially changed for eligibility.

This is the 21st year for the awards. The Cadillac ATS took top car honors last year.

Ford unveiled a new F-150 with a body built almost entirely out of aluminum at the Detroit auto show.

The lighter material shaves as much as 700 pounds off the 5,000-pound truck, a revolutionary change for a vehicle known for its heft and an industry still heavily reliant on steel.

The change is Ford’s response to small-business owners’ desire for a more fuel-efficient and nimble truck — and stricter government requirements on fuel economy. And it sprang from a challenge by Ford’s CEO to move beyond the traditional design for a full-size pickup
